We are currently in search of a Senior Director of Finance and Operations for The Watershed Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on keeping water clean, safe, and healthy. The position is based in Pennington, NJ (Onsite). This is a full-time permanent position.

The Watershed Institute, a dynamic and multifaceted nonprofit conservation organization seeks a talented, full-time Senior Director of Finance and Operations who is passionate about environmental conservation and has experience in managing organization-wide operations. The Senior Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for the maintenance and integrity of The Watershed Institute’s finances, as well as the organization’s effective and efficient operations, including its buildings and grounds and Information Technology. This person reports to the organization’s Executive Director, supervises several employees, and works side-by-side with its Chief of Programs and Strategy and Development Director to ensure the Watershed’s sound management and execution of the organization’s Strategic Plan.

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a nonprofit organization preferred.
  • Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading high-performing teams.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Track record of effective and inclusive collaboration with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Direct experience with operations management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Passion for the mission and work of the organization.
  • Passionate interest in mentoring others and working as a team.

 

 

How You Will Spend Your Day:

Financial Management, Budgeting, & Reporting:

  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, grants management, payroll, banking, investments, and other financial systems.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and senior staff, providing analysis of performance against revenue and expense budgets, recommendations for operational changes to address variances as needed, and insights on financial risks and opportunities.
  • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, investment managers, and other financial service providers.
  • Develop and implement financial strategies and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making and the organization’s mission and goals.

 

Insurance, Contracts & Regulatory Compliance:

  • Evaluate and obtain adequate insurance coverage (general liability, directors and officers’ liability, property insurance, automobile, etc.).
  • Review contracts between the organization and outside parties around any issues that involve the organization’s financial exposure.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial and other regulations, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements.

 

Leadership and Planning:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Chief of Strategy and Programs, Development Director, and other senior leaders to execute strategic plans and goals that support the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization’s values and strategic goals, and provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance and technology team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

 

Facilities:

  • Supervise the Conservation Director and ensure proper funding, maintenance, and operations of the Watershed Institute’s buildings and grounds, including the efficient use of energy and other resources.

 

Information Technology:

  • Supervise the IT Manager and ensure the proper maintenance, funding, and leadership necessary to support the organization’s staff and programs are in place.
  • Ensure that the organization’s various data management and IT platforms and systems are up-to-date and appropriately integrated to ensure the efficiency of operations.

 

Supervision of Staff:

  • Supervise a team that includes the Conservation Director, Bookkeeper, IT Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, Weekend Building Manager, and Gift Shop Manager.
