Title: Associate Director of Veterinary Services


Job Description:


Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced veterinarian to join our team as an Associate Director of Veterinary Services. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for overseeing the clinical care of animals and providing mentorship, support, and leadership to other veterinarians and support staff within our primate breeding colony. Your expertise will contribute to the enhancement and transformation of our veterinary program into a world-class facility. The health and welfare of our animals are our top priority, and you will have the full support of senior management in achieving this goal.


Key Responsibilities:


1. Clinical Care and Management:

  - Provide expert medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure humane and adequate veterinary support.

  - Conduct physical, ophthalmic, and other necessary examinations on laboratory animals, with a focus on non-human primates (NHPs).

  - Manage clinical cases, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

  - Collaborate with the site supervisor to ensure that animal care and welfare policies and practices are compliant with relevant regulations.

  - Lead efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality rates within the breeding colony.

  - Oversee animal pairing and group formation to ensure compatibility, mental well-being, and the prevention of stress-related illnesses.

  - Implement environmental enrichment programs to promote the health and mental well-being of all animals.

  - Perform behavioral assessments before euthanasia in potentially problematic cases.

  - Update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to veterinary care and animal welfare.


2. Mentoring and Training:

  - Provide mentoring and support to other veterinarians and supporting staff.

  - Conduct training sessions for both veterinary and supporting staff, ensuring compliance with best practices in laboratory animal medicine.

  - Oversee husbandry staff training to enhance their skills and knowledge in animal care.


3. Program Enhancement and Regulatory Compliance:

  - Collaborate with senior management on growth designs and strategic initiatives to elevate the veterinary program to a 5-star standard.

  - Ensure that all aspects of animal care, including physiological welfare, environmental enrichment, and group dynamics, align with the highest standards in the field.

  - Maintain active DEA registration and obtain or commit to obtaining a Florida DVM license within 60 days of employment.


4. Reporting and Resolution:

  - Promptly report and address all animal care concerns, actively participating in their resolution.

  - Work with site leadership to guarantee that policies and procedures pertaining to animal care and welfare remain in compliance with applicable regulations.


5. Other Duties:

  - Perform any other duties as assigned by senior management to support the overall success of the veterinary program.


Qualifications:


- Clinical veterinary experience; candidates with laboratory animal medicine or emergency veterinary experience are preferred.

- Strong desire to work with non-human primates (NHPs) and a commitment to their welfare.

- Active DEA registration.

- Ability to obtain a Florida DVM license within 60 days of accepting the offer.
